It’s been six months since we officially began our Boundary adventure – and what a six months it has been.
From the initial days spent conducting research, to working with our design and development partners to build the product, our experience as the latest start-up on the block has been synonymous with most other start-ups – rewarding and challenging.
Our latest adventure started with our co-founder, Robin. While on honeymoon in America, Robin realised that if he was burgled there was nothing he could do but watch the events unfold on his internet enabled security cameras. A harrowing thought for anyone, even more so when you’re thousands of miles away from home.
Upon returning to Scotland, Robin began his quest for an alternative alarm system. But despite his efforts, he could not find what he was looking for – an entry-level smart security alarm with the option of connecting to police response.
Cue our light bulb moment …
With our last business venture now behind us after a successful acquisition, we instantly knew this was our next bright idea. And despite having been on the start-up merry-go-round once before, we were more than willing to jump right back in with the creation of the UK’s first smart home security system for the mass market.
So, how have we found the journey so far?
First thing’s first. We are growing. And fast. Our team of two has already expanded to five and we have plans to double our headcount by the end of Q1 next year. In fact, we have several tech and marketing roles available right now (a hint for any of those who are looking!) It has been extremely rewarding to see the team expand so quickly and it feels great to be creating jobs within the local Edinburgh tech community – something that we are always keen to support.
The past few months have been a very steep learning curve for all of us here at Boundary. But that’s part of the fun and is what we enjoy most about working in a start-up. In order to create our product, we have had to be ‘sponges’, absorbing information to help build our knowledge and expertise. From mobile connectivity technology, to the layout of the keypad, technical specs of the power unit and how wide the view angle should be for the movement sensor. You name it, we are learning it!
There have been challenges too, but that’s no bad thing. In fact, it’s what gets us out of bed in the morning. The security industry is (rightly so) very heavily regulated. So not only have we had to ensure we fully understand these regulations, but we have had to come up with ways that we can meet these standards while still reaching our vision of creating a beautiful, affordable and user-friendly smart alarm.
Despite all this, we have relished every moment of our experience so far. It’s brilliant to be back in the heart of Scotland’s buzzing start-up scene, and with our Kickstarter campaign going live in the new year, we are extremely excited for what 2019 has in store for all of us at Boundary.
